MOBERLY, Mo. - The Independence Women's Basketball team is still in search of their first win of the season, as they dropped a pair of games on opening weekend at the Moberly Classic.
Game one the Pirates squared off with Southwestern Illinois College. The game was very evenly matched through the first 20 minutes, as SIC won the first quarter by five, and the Pirates immediately answered, winning the second quarter by six taking a one point lead into the half. Southwestern Illinois would go on to outscore the Pirates 51-18 in the second half, leading to the big 89-57 victory.
Both teams shot 22% from three but SIC was able to shoot 46% from the field compared to the Pirates 36%.
Jade Oliney led the way for the Pirates with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Danaiya Stillwell-Smith added nine points and four rebounds of her own. Ra’Niyah Tillman had a team high 11 rebounds in the loss.
On day two, the Pirates looked to bounce back against John A. Logan. Once again the Pirates got off to a great start, but a tough third quarter led to the 63-55 defeat. The Pirates had a 34-27 lead at the half, but John A. Logan won the third quarter 23-11, swinging the lead in their favor.
The Pirates had three players finish in double figures, led by Mimi White with 22 points, Stillwell-Smith added 13, and Flutra Mehmeti had 11 points off of the bench. For the second game in a row the Pirates only converted 50% of their free throws, and had double-digit turnovers, two big factors in the loss.
The Pirates will look for their first victory when they next take the court, Wednesday when they travel to take on Northern Oklahoma - Tonkawa, tip-off set for 5:30 pm.
