COFFEYVILLE, Kan. - The Independence Volleyball team completed a winning weekend at the Coffeyville Community College Tournament winning three of their four matches over the two days of action.
All four of the Pirates matches were completed in straight sets, as it all began Friday night when they swept Southwestern JV 25-11, 25-12, 25-15. The lone loss of the weekend came in game two Friday night as they fell to Western Iowa Tech for the second time this year, 18-25, 17-25, 19-25.
Independence would bounce back in a big way Saturday morning as they took down St. Louis CC 25-23, 25-21, 27-25, before finishing the weekend with another straight set sweep of Southwestern Community College out of Iowa, 25-18, 25-16, 25-12.
In game one on Friday, Kat Balog led the way with eight kills, while Taisya Combs-Pierce added seven. In Saturday’s win over St. Louis, Alyssa Trane had seven kills and 11 digs, and Combs-Pierce added seven kills of her own along with five blocks. Kimberly Owens dished out 15 assists, while Keely Brown and Ryleigh Zitek added four and three blocks respectively. In the final win of the weekend, Trane added another eight kills, while Sophia Reyes once again paced the Pirates defensively with 17 digs. Brown added another five blocks, while the Pirates pair of setters, Owens and freshman Serrena Hernandez each had seven assists.
The Pirates will return home for a mid-week KJCCC match against the number one team in the country, Cowley, Wednesday at 6:30 pm.
