Pirates come up empty against rival Coffeyville

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Softball team had a slow day at the plate as they dropped a pair of games to rival Coffeyville 5-0 and 11-0 Saturday afternoon. 

In game one, it took Indy until the bottom of third to register their first hit of the game, by that time they were already playing from behind after surrendering a run in the first, and two in the third. They would be retired in order in both the fourth and the fifth inning, while Coffeyville pushed their lead to four. The Pirates threatened to score in the sixth inning, as they loaded the bases with two outs, with a pair of singles from Taylor Nixon and Alexis Yarnell. A flyout would end the inning and strand the three runners. The Red Ravens would add another run in the top half of the seventh before retiring the side in order to seal the victory. 

Maddison Wammock had a double as the only other hit for the Pirates. Sarah Wrape through a complete game surrendering five runs, four of which were earned and striking out one. 

In game two, it was all Coffeyville, as they scored a run in all five innings of the run rule shortened game. They jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first, and added single runs in the second and third innings. Indy was able to muster extra base hits in the first three innings, including a lead off double by Juliann Kindle in the second inning, but stranded each runner in all three innings Coffeyville broke the game open with two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth. Indy was able to get two runners on in the final frame, but were unable to capitalize, leaving both runners stranded and falling 11-0. 

The Pirates now gear up for the final doubleheader of their homestand, as they host Johnson County on Tuesday.
