INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - There were plenty of runs Wednesday as the Independence Lady Pirates battled the #18 Butler Grizzlies in a test of power. Coach Allen's squad gave all they could, but the power of the Grizzlies' bats was too much as they would fall victim in a 9-7 and 20-7 affair.

In game one, Butler opened with a two-run homer in the first inning, but the Lady Pirates put together several hits to take a 3-2 lead. The Grizzlies responded with six runs through the top of the seventh before a four-run bottom of the seventh in which Independence seemed to be mounting a comeback before a run-down ended the game.

Game two saw another 2-0 start for the Grizzlies, but the Lady Pirates did not lie down as a home run for Kiana Turner cut the lead in half. A quick slide in under a tag for Kiersten Brown tied the game at 2-2 and two more runs scored after a double by Cameron Ortiz who came in to score after a single from Madison Harley. All seemed to be going well with Independence posting a 5-2 advantage through 4.5 innings, but once again the bats of Butler were just too much as the Grizzlies outscored the Lady Pirates 18-2 for a 13-run victory.

Independence (8-9, 4-4)  is back in action Sunday March 31 against the Garden City Broncbusters beginning at 12 pm.
